Reduce Aircon Power Bill- 5 free tips

Reduce Air Conditioning Running Costs this Summer!

Did you know, that maintaining your outdoor air conditioning condenser unit is important? And that regular maintenance can reduce your power bills and save you money. People tend to forget about the outdoor system because it is generally out of sight and out of mind. But after reading this… you may start taking better care of your unit!

5 Easy – Do It Yourself Aircon Maintenance Tips to Save $$$$$

  1. Turn off your AC when mowing the lawn – Mowing the lawn can be a pain in itself, but having to mow the lawn and clean the outdoor system each time may be even more time consuming. Consider turning your air con off whilst mowing the lawn, the outdoor unit sucks up the dirt, dust, grass clippings, weeds and whatever else gets blown its way clogging the condenser coils, reducing the efficiency and increasing running costs.

  1. Sweep up pet dander- Having dogs and cats live outside, means that their fur can be found all around the garden. The fur can also be easily sucked up by the outdoor system creating, what looks like a fur blanket on the side and back of the system. To avoid this, sweep up pet hair regularly which will make your system run more efficiently and avoid other possible costly issues.

  1. Avoid putting pot plants on the outdoor unit- Yes, plants make the unit look pretty! But… they also cause rust and in the long term actually make the system look old and outdated. Avoid placing anything on the outdoor unit to prolonging its lifespan and save you money on having to buy a new one sooner than originally planned. Another helpful way to avoid rust and prolong your unit’s life, is to wash it with mild soapy water and if you’re feeling up to it, polish the system with car polish, not only will it extend its life but it’ll be pleasing to the eye, especially if it is in a visible area.

  1. Avoid putting a shelter on the system- Homes that are near the ocean should especially avoid placing a shelter over their outside system or enclosing it in a box. People often think this will extend its shelf life, but actually it will shorten it. Condensers are built for the outdoors and depend on rain to naturally cleanse them. When enclosed they are out of site and out of mind, corrosion in harsh environments such as coastal areas is a huge problem and it is made worse with minimal maintenance.

  1. Flush the coils regularly – Just as the rain naturally washes condenser units, you can hose down your outdoor air conditioning condenser, position you garden hose nozzle in a downward position to flush contaminants out of the coils. Clean the side and back of the unit from top to bottom for best results. Do not point your nozzle directly into the fan unit as you could possibly wet the condenser electronics which could result in damage.

SAFETY FIRST:

Air conditioningRemember to turn the power isolation switch off before performing any maintenance on your air conditioning unit. Your isolating switch will typically be located on the wall within a couple of meters from your condenser unit. If you cannot locate an isolating switch you might have to isolate the power to you air conditioner by turning off the appropriate circuit or breaker in you power distribution / meter box.

These are just a few energy saving tips which will also help you extend the life of your aircon ultimately SAVING YOU $$$.  Another tip and possibly the most vital one is to have your indoor evaporator unit professionally cleaned and sanitised every 12 months. Sanitair Adelaide

Sanitair Services Ronald McDonald House

David McGlashan from Sanitair Adelaide was recently contacted by Ronald McDonald House Adelaide in relation to cleaning and sanitising the hi-wall split system air conditioners in their family apartment complex.  Sanitair has previously provided HVAC Hygiene remediation for Ronald McDonald House in NSW and Adelaide was also keen to experience the improved air quality as a result of contracting Sanitair Adelaide.

Ronald McDonald House provides accommodation for families of children that have to relocate to enable access to vital on going medical treatment. Some of the families have travelled from as far as the Northern Territory and are now living 1000’s of km from “home”. Quite often families have to relocate for many months – one family in particular travelled to Adelaide from Darwin in February and “with a bit of luck” might be home for Xmas! They have to endure 10 months away from home as their 2yr old is being treated for leukaemia – it is extremely humbling and put our daily worries into perspective!

There are 10 family apartments on site and for families and those living with compromised immune systems maintaining a healthy environment is paramount. Regular professional air conditioning cleaning and sanitising ensures a high standard of indoor air quality and minimises risk.

Sanitair Adelaide familiar to RMHC

Ronald McDonald House Adelaide Operations Manager Tim Rees-Jones was familiar with Sanitair from the air conditioning cleaning services provided at Ronald McDonald House in Randwick NSW and from his time with The Mantra Group.

Sanitair Adelaide had previously cleaned the a/c’s at “Mantra on Frome” and “BreakFree Directors Studios” in Adelaide.  After Tim had witnessed the benefits of Sanitair first hand he had no hesitation in contracting Sanitair Adelaide once again to undertake the work at Ronald McDonald House.

David from Sanitair Adelaide said the challenges of completing his work whilst working in and around families who occupy the apartments whilst inconvenient compared to the inconvenience that the families are going through is really insignificant.

Sanitair donates funds to Cystic Fibrosis Australia’s research for a cure!

May was National Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month. Across the country, thousands of volunteers came together to raise awareness about this devastating disease and share their story of hope and progress.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a relatively common inherited disease in which from infancy there are recurrent chest infections causing lung damage, intestinal malabsorption leading to severe malnutrition and growth failure, and there is an excess of salt in the sweat. Untreated, the condition is usually fatal in infancy or early childhood. With treatment, the average life expectancy of people who live to adulthood is about 37 years and this is increasing. (Credit: Cystic Fibrosis Australia)

Facts about Cystic Fibrosis

  • There is currently no cure
  • In Australia, one in 2,500 babies are born with CF, that’s one every four days
  • There are over a Million carriers of CF in Australia
  • Since 1986, all newborns have been subject to a heel prick test for diagnosis
  • People with CF are not encouraged to socialise with each other. The risk of cross-infection and exacerbation of lung conditions is too great. CF can be a lonely existence.

For the month of May, a number of local Sanitair technicians donated a percentage of every Premium Split System Service they carried out. The funds go toward Cystic Fibrosis Australia’s 65 Roses national fundraising campaign to be used as research for a cure.

mould

Ways to reduce mould in your home and office

Mould needs moist warm conditions and a food source. That food source may be carpets, flooring, aircons or anything the organism can grow on. Air conditioners are the perfect breeding ground.

How can mould affect us?

Common symptoms include: headaches, achy joints, asthma, fatigue, sinus, respiratory infections, skin infections and anxiety. According to NSW Health, “if inhaled the spores can cause blocked noses, irritation to the eyes and skin. People can develop mould infections, usually in the lungs, asthma sufferers can have an attack and life-threatening conditions are possible — although only in rare cases.”

Mould is a harmful contaminant. It is hazardous and can consume everything around it. Minute spores are released by the mould in order to reproduce.

According to Dr Gaskin “mould spores don’t affect all people in a similar way. You could line 10 people up in a room and they could have a completely different reaction depending on their sensitivities or ill health. The symptoms are easy to confuse with general colds and flu.” she said. (Source: www.news.com.au)

How to prevent mould in your home and office

dirtyReducing dampness in your home or office can prevent mould from growing. Other preventions include:

Reducing humidity, Good ventilation and Controlling moisture

  • Lower the use of unflued gas heaters
  • Limit the amount of indoor plants and fish tanks in your home/office
  • Avoid or lower the use of humidifiers
  • Open windows for good ventilation
  • Turn on exhaust fans in bathrooms laundries and kitchens
  • Don’t ignore water leaks and plumbing problems. Fix all water problems as soon as you can
  • Carpets damaged by water and building materials must be washed and cleaned. Get rid of any material/furniture that cannot be cleaned and dried.
  • Run your air conditioner at 24 degrees as this helps to control the moisture in the room. If running a unit at its lowest temperature with windows open, this can add to the problem. Close windows and doors when running air conditioning. Ensure your system doesn’t contain mould as this can cause further problems. Contact a professional aircon cleaning company such as Sanitair Australia in this case.

What to do if your aircons have been affected by mould

Air conditioning units are another area that mould and organisms grown on and in. If they are not regularly cleaned and sanitised, you and your family may be breathing in contaminated air which can make you feel ill and fatigued. Sanitair Australia offers a Premium Split System Service which is the most popular and thorough service. The premium service is recommended annually for Asthma and Allergy sufferers and Sanitair® guarantees treated air conditioners indoor coils will be free of mould and bacterial contamination for a period of 12 months from treatment date.  If any treated indoor coil is found to have mould contamination within the guarantee period, Sanitair® will clean and retreat the contaminated system at no charge to the customer.
